Vom 20. – 21. November 2019 fand in Maastricht der Workshop „Diffusion of innovation from urban living labs” statt. Der Workshop wurde im Kontext verschiedener JPI Urban Europe Projekte und Aktivitäten organisiert. Ziel war es, Erkenntnisse aus verschiedenen Projekten (u.a. UrbanUp), die mit urbanen Living Labs, Experimenten oder Reallaboren, zusammenzutragen und sich kritisch mit Diffusionspotenzialen, die aus solchen Projekten entstehen, auseinanderzusetzen
Diese grundsätzliche Fragestellung nach einem gelingenden „Upscaling“ ist auch im Projekt UrbanUp zentral: wie können Erkenntnisse oder Innovationen, die in urbanen Reallaboren und ähnlichen transdisziplinären Formaten entstehen, breitere Wirkung innerhalb einer Stadtgesellschaft entfalten, institutionalisiert werden und in andere Kontexte übertragbar gemacht werden?
Die Diskussionen während des Workshops zeigten, dass einige Schlüsselfragen weiter erforscht und geklärt werden sollten, u.a. in Bezug auf die Vielfalt der in unterschiedlichen disziplinären Kontexten verwendeten Konzepte (upscaling, diffusion, transferability) und die Bedingungen für eine erfolgreiche Verbreitung von innovativen Lösungen für nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung. Neben diesen konzeptionellen Fragen drehte sich die Diskussion dann insbesondere auch um methodologische und methodische Aspekte, insbesondere das konkrete „Wie?“ der Analyse von Diffusionsprozessen und entsprechender Potenziale.
Die Ergebnisse dieser Diskussionen im Detail sollen demnächst im Rahmen von Konferenzbeiträgen, Veranstaltungen und einem gemeinsamen Papier zur breiteren Diskussion gestellt werden. Zunächst sollen dafür die verschiedenen Ansätze und Analyserahmen systematisch erfasst und die zentralen Forschungsbedarfe identifiziert und festgehalten werden.
Workshop “Diffusion of innovation from urban living labs”, 20. – 21.11.2019, Maastricht
On November 20/21 2019 the workshop “Diffusion of innovation from urban living labs” took place in Maastricht. It was organized in the context of several JPI Urban Europe projects and activities. The main goal of the workshop was to synthesize insights from different projects (UrbanUp amongst others), which work with urban living labs or real-world labs, and critically discuss the potential for diffusing innovative approaches and ideas emerging from such projects.
In the project UrbanUp the question of how to achieve successful “upscaling” is key: how can insights and innovations developed in urban real-world labs and similar transdisciplinary formats achieve broader impacts in a city, institutionalization and possibly also transferability to other contexts?
The discussions during the workshop showed that a number of key questions need to be addressed, for instance with regard to the plurality of concepts used in different disciplinary contexts (upscaling, diffusion, transferability etc.) and the conditions in practice for enabling successful diffusion of innovative solutions for sustainable urban development. Apart from these more conceptual issues, methodological questions were central: how can we analyze the potential of diffusion?
The results of the workshop will be presented more in detail in the context of conference contributions and sessions and a joint paper will be developed. The focus will be on a systematic mapping of the various concepts and frameworks used and future research avenues will be identified.
